Research abstract

The propulsion flow path design is critical for success for modern day integrated air vehicle platforms. The propulsion flow path consists of three major components: the inlet, the engine, and the nozzle. A major consideration for any propulsion flow path is the inlet-engine compatibility. Inlet designers and engine operability engineers are required to work closely together. The engine manufacturer performs a multitude of ground tests to map the performance of the engine under a variety of conditions. The inlet designer will test the inlet in a wind tunnel to determine the performance of the duct. The inlet designer is responsible for quantifying the quality of the flow entering the engine face. This flow quality is measured in a parameter called distortion. If the flow has high levels of non-uniformity, it can cause engine stall. Unfortunately, while the inlet test can quantify the dynamic distortion at the inlet-engine interface plane, the engine manufacturer relies on equipment that can only simulate steady state distortion. RSI has developed a dynamic distortion generation system that can generate any desired distortion pattern and mimic dynamic pressure fluctuations seen in an inlet.
