Research abstract

To address the Air Force’s need for dynamic inlet flow generator, Engineering & Scientific Innovations, Inc. (ESI) proposes to develop a new Jet Induced Inlet Flow Generator(JIIFG). This proposed JIIFG is based on a new design that utilizes ESI’s developed Smart Fire Suppression System (SFSS) that utilized impinging jets to dynamically control the dispersion of fire suppressant along with the University of Cincinnati’s micro-jet injection used to control the mixing of supersonic jets. The innovation in dynamic impinging jets will enable the JIIFG to dynamically control the inlet flow parameters such as vertical structures and separation. As a result, this technology offers the ability to control the time variation of the inlet flow which directly address the dynamic inlet flow generator requirements laid out by the Air Force.  During Phase I, ESI will demonstrate the feasibility of JIIFG by modeling a concept JIIFG inlet in CFD and then validating the model with basic experiments. In Phase II, ESI plans to improve the design using the CFD model then construct a prototype JIIFG.
