Research abstract

ATA Engineering, Inc. (ATA), in collaboration with the programÆs Research Institution partner, proposes a Phase I Small Business Technology Transfer program to demonstrate how the application of modeling and simulation to design and optimization of pyrolysis cycles can benefit the lead time, cost, and scrap risk of critical carbon-carbon composite (CCC) components for Army and DoD thermal protection system (TPS) applications. The research team will demonstrate the feasibility of applying current through-process thermal-chemical-mechanical modeling capabilities, along with advanced image-based simulation, to modeling pyrolysis of a relevant CCC precursor material. Modeling capabilities will be integratedĀinto a multi-objective optimization software framework within ATAÆs COMPAS Manufacturing Suite to simultaneously address multiple cycle metrics and design and demonstrate an optimized cycle schedule.
