Research abstract

The goal of this Phase 2 STTR program isĀbring the benefits of machine health and usage monitoring to a broad spectrum of Navy and Marine Corps assets. The proposed solution integrates vibration sensing with sufficient bandwidth and dynamic range for the machine health monitoring applications with signal acquisition and processing, artificial intelligence, data storage, and communications inĀa compact (1 cubic inch), low-cost (less than $100 per unit), battery-powered device with an unattended service life of 3 years or greater. The device will be capable of monitoring asset usage, detecting and classifying faults, and of predicting the remaining useful service lifeĀassets. Existing technologies and devices will be employed to create an integrated system meeting the requirements, the preferred solution from a cost and development-time perspective.ĀIn Phase 1, a survey of available subsystem technologies was conducted in light of the requirements, the core elements of the system being an accelerometer for measuring machine vibration, analog to digital conversion, system control and signal processing, integrated artificial intelligence models to derive actionable information from raw data, communications, and energy storage.ĀĀ Ā InĀPhase 1 a system concept meeting the operational requirements by employing and adapting existing devices and technologies was demonstrated.ĀThe system that will be further developed in Phase 2Āintegrates a laboratory demonstrated, low-cost, precision accelerometer developed by ADVIS with commercially available low-power microcontrollers widely employed in intelligent ōedge devicesö.Ā A sample application was demonstrated in Phase 1 illustrating how application development may be supported byĀthe ōEdge ImpulseöĀa development environmentĀto make new application development straightforward for the machine health monitoring user community. In the Phase 2 Base program the proposed integrated system will be built andĀdemonstrated in a laboratory environment.Ā In the Phase 2 Option 1 program the sensors will be manufactured in greater quantities andĀfield tested in a Navy or Marine Corp platform.
