Research abstract
Inthefaceoftherisingclimaticthreatsaccesstowell-adjustedhousinginsuranceisamust.Modern
insurancecarriersheavilyrelyonaerialimagingofpropertiesandAImodelstoquoteandassess
premiumsattherenewaltimeandtopayoutdamagesuponclaimsaftereventslikehurricanesor
winterstorms.Up-to-dateaerialimagingisnecessarybeforeandafterdamageeventsasithelps
speeduppayoutsandadjustandquoteinsurancepremiumsatamorecompetitiverate.
Howevertheupdatedaerialimagingnecessarytoextendthisimprovementandresiliencytorural
areasismissing.Typicallythisimagingiscapturedwithairplanesata2-4inch/pixelresolutionbut
does not cover US rural areas due to cost andscalabilityissues.Itisestimatedthat60Mrural
propertiesaremissingupdatedimagery.
Inordertobridgethisgapweproposetheusageofstratosphericballoonstoprovidehighresolution
imaging.Balloonsat60000ftandhigherprovideavantagepointfromwhichimaginglargerural
areasatthereasonablecostbecomesfeasible.Thekeytechnologicaldevelopmentneededisanoptical
systemcapableofachievingthenecessaryresolutionfromstratosphericheights.Inthisprojectwe
designprototypeandtestsuchanopticalsystem.Weexpecttoachievealightweighttelescopedesign
capableofenduringalow-temperaturelow-pressureenvironmentandproviding2-4inchresolution
imagingfromthestratosphere.
