Research abstract

The goal of this program is to develop new multi-objective numerical modeling approaches to accelerate the design, fabrication, and testing of novel lightweight, multifunctional, solid-state thermal energy storage and structural mesostructures/metamaterials.  Commercial off the shelf (COTS) and Government off the shelf (GOTS) simulation packages will be leveraged to design open-cell and composite aerospace metamaterials for improved maneuverability, survivability, and performance on hypersonic platforms.  These advanced structures will take advantage of newly-identified crystallographic phase transformations in additively manufactured metallic alloys coupled with lightweight and high-conductivity aerospace materials to produce a new class of metamaterials.  This approach will enable small, lightweight, and high-strength/-stiffness, multifunctional transient thermal management and thermal protection solutions for current and emerging hypersonic airframes, control surfaces, electronic packages and IR /electro-optical windows.  This presents a unique opportunity for a paradigm shift in the design approach to multifunctional thermal/mechanical mesostructures that will meet the requirements and enable the practical implementation of hypersonic systems.
