Research abstract

HJ Science & Technology, Inc. proposes to demonstrate the feasibility of a rapid field portable technology capable of performing on-site detection of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in wastewater and solid waste.  The automated device is designed such that tall six per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in United States Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed National Primary Drinking Water Regulation:   perfluorooctanoic acid, perfluorooctanesulfonic acid, perfluorononanoic acid, hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid, perfluorohexanesulfonic acid, and perfluorobutanesulfonic acid, in the sample can be identified and quantified.  Furthermore, the device is compact, lightweight, portable, inexpensive, and easy to use, specifically designed for the on-site detection with sensitivity and selectivity comparable to laboratory-based instruments. In Phase I, we will first establish the device’s measurement capability by analyzing tap water spiked with known concentrations.  We will then analyze real-life samples. The measured concentration levels will be validated by established laboratory based EPA Methods 537.1. In Phase I Option, we will further characterize and optimize the measurement device before integration into a rapid portable prototype in Phase II.
