Research abstract

The Air Force needs a mechanism to generate synthetic weather based on user-specified scenarios to support training exercises and simulations. These synthetic weather products need to be realistic for the region and time of interest, and weather variables need to be consistent. For example, the ground cannot be dry if it had been raining for a few days. Moreover, any generated weather products need to be disseminated across Department of Defense domains. Unfortunately, no such synthetic weather generation system exists. To meet this need, Creare and our Pennsylvania State University collaborators propose to develop the Realistic Environmental Impacts (using Generative Neural Networks) Maps (REIGNNMap) system. REIGNNMap is a software system composed of a core weather generation capability, intuitive user interface, and an open standards-based product server that will generate and disseminate realistic synthetic weather tailored to user-specified scenarios.
