Research abstract

The warfighter depends on robust and rapid positional navigation information to complete their missions effectively, but many of their wireless navigation systems are vulnerable to electromagnetic interference (EMI), in both congested and contested environments. The extent to which wireless systems are adversely affected by EMI depends largely on the embedded protection within the radio navigation waveform, i.e. the signal modulation, the forward error correction (FEC) coding and the waveform ‘processing gain’ derived from spectral spreading. Whereas a typical FEC coding scheme might provide 6dB of coding gain and a typical spread spectrum system might provide a processing gain of 20dB, these embedded waveform protections come at a corresponding cost of reduced bandwidth efficiency. However, in the last few years digital signal processing (DSP) based radio interference mitigation (IM) filter technology has advanced significantly in terms of IM performance benefit, DSP resource utilization and ‘do no harm’ monitoring, enabling far more robust operation of critical wireless assets with a low SWAP-C IM filter implementation using the same wireless waveform, with no loss in link capacity or speed. Adaptive Dynamics Inc. (ADI) has been developing advanced DSP based IM technology for the DoD since 2009 and has focused on both embedded IM filters (i.e. VHDL filter IP for modern wireless SDR platforms with available FPGA resources) and external IM appliques (i.e. RF-In/RF-Out IM filter solutions for use with legacy wireless systems). The IM applique that ADI proposes for this Air Force Phase II effort is the ARTEMIS Low SWaP Multi-Rate Interference Mitigation Applique which supports simultaneous L1 and L2 protection. This IM filter will utilize a Xilinx Artix 7 FPGA and will fit in a compact (7.75" x 4.4" x 1.0") package and will enable the warfighter to insert an MPE-M card into a high-performance multi-channel IM applique for use in low SWaP-C applications like UAV's, portable sensors, underwater devices, etc. Additionally, ADI has been in contact with the manufacturer of the MPE-M card and will synthesize an IM filter in VHDL with the same configuration and IM performance as the IM filter being implemented for ARTEMIS. Inserting the MAGIC IMPS filter into the MPE-M card will immediately make the MPE-M card significantly more resistant to dynamic and challenging operationally relevant interference (ORI) jamming signals.
