Research abstract

The U.S. will potentially be facing threats from adversaries over the next several decades. One component of a robust and credible deterrent will be endoatmospheric, hypersonic interceptors capable of executing precision terminal maneuvers to address threats from hypersonic weapon systems. ATA Engineering (ATA) has developed a suite of tools for efficiently performing high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of reacting flows to aid in the design and analysis of advanced interceptor concepts and, in particular, to analyze the efficacy and response of divert and attitude control system (DACS) thrusters. ATAÆs computational suite includes a tool for developing tailored chemical kinetic models (ATACK), an efficient finite-rate combustion model (DISTANT), and integration with a multi-fidelity turbulence model (DHRL). In the proposed Phase II effort, ATA will continue to enhance the model fidelity and performance. Key enhancements include the development of a Reynolds-averaged Navier¢Stokes (RANS)-based laminar-to-turbulent transition model for high-speed applications and the development of a hybrid finite-rate/equilibrium chemistry model based on the ATA-developed DISTANT combustion model. For Phase II, ATA has partnered with CUBRC to perform a comprehensive ground-test afterburning jet interaction campaign at flight-relevant conditions using the Advanced Interceptor Technology (AIT) model in a high-enthalpy shock tunnel. High-speed optical diagnostics will be used to interrogate transient flow and thermochemistry features; this data will be used to correlate and substantiate the analysis models developed under this effort.
