Research abstract

Triton Systems, Inc. and partners will develop the Hydraulic Subsea Stud Welder (HSSW), a hydraulic friction stud welding device for the U.S. Navy that joins 5000 series aluminum studs to the hulls of the Littoral Combat Ships (LCS). Triton’s HSSW performs friction stud welds in as little as 10 seconds all while being portable and diver friendly. The HSSW can spin studs at speeds up to 12,000 RPM while requiring minimal input from US Navy diver personnel. The HSSW will provide the US Navy with an easy-to-use solution for friction welding aluminum studs in subsea applications.
