Research abstract

USAF Medical Services has a national Defense-related mission need in the area of transportation and logistics of temperature sensitive materiel in austere environments, specifically to insulate, actively monitor and report, and automatically log temperature data for standard logistics containers in Arctic or Sub-Arctic environments to maintain viability of critical materiel supporting Agile Combat Employment (ACE) operations. Current medical logistics containers are not insulated and provide no environmental protection from "cold soaking" of temperature sensitive materiel. Lukla Inc. proposes a passive insulation and active reheating system designed to nest into the Air Force's existing reusable logistics containers. This approach alleviates the need to redesign logistics processes or materiel assemblages to support Arctic environments by augmenting existing infrastructure. Ultra-high efficient insulation increases the R-value of the shipping containers from less than 3 to a goal of 30 R-value per inch to ensure extended shelf life with consistent internal temperatures for longer durations in more extreme environments. Additionally, this system can be extended beyond medical supplies to include food, perishables, batteries, electronics, fuels or any temperature sensitive material or equipment. Thermally insulated shipping containers with temperature monitoring systems are also relevant in extreme heat environments to extend viability of cold-chain items and ensure the integrity of the contents.
