Research abstract

Ultra short pulse lasers are used or proposed to be used in many areas of accelerator applications. In particular Type III and IV lasers as described in the solicitation are of high interest for secondary radiation and particle sources. Current laser capabilities are not sufficient to meet the needs of the Department of Energy High Energy Physics community and higher pulse energy and average power as well as higher wall plug efficiency are required for practical secondary source generation. Recently, Cornell has demonstrated a novel hybridized parametric amplification approach to fundamentally alter the nonlinear dynamics of optical parametric amplification techniques. The approach enables uniform pump energy extraction and thus, high quantum efficiency. We propose to further develop this technology and produce a novel Hybridized Parametric Generation device capable of converting Near-IR pump into Mid-IR radiation with >50% conversion efficiency. The proposed approach will produce a robust and cost-effective device that could be easily and widely adopted for the efficient frequency down-conversion of modern high-power lasers. In Phase-I, we will create a breadboard prototype of a hybridized parametric generation system and experimentally demonstrate the approach. The effort will include both simulations and associated experiments to understand the new approach capabilities and possible limitations. In parallel, OKSI will develop system designs and associated market analysis for potential applications of the technology produced under this project. In Phase-II, we will continue to further the technology and produce a prototype system that will fully demonstrate the technology to the High Energy Physics community, providing a major milestone towards reaching Type III/ Type IV laser parameters as well as providing an example system for commercialization. The commercialization path will include integration of the hybridized parametric generator into commercially viable package that can be used as an output stage for commercial laser systems. We will also pursue potential market opportunities outside accelerator applications in areas that include industrial, defense and medical applications.
