Research abstract

Crea&ng lithium-ion ba2eries with enhanced crash resistance, guaranteeing the structural integrity of nuclear energy plants against seismic events, and hardening solar panels for hail impact all exemplify the indispensable role of dynamic structural analysis. However, this ?eld grapples with a signi?cant challengeŚthe labor-intensive and resource-consuming process required to develop high-?delity analysis models. Shockingly, preparing these simula&ons can devour up to 75% of the analysis budget, incurring substan&al costs for the government and industry. Addressing this challenge is paramount, calling for more e?cient and cost-e?ec&ve simula&on development methods. This proposal aims to tackle this challenge head-on by craKing a geometrically versa&le numerical method designed to automate the presently laborious process. The envisioned method, drawing inspira&on from polyhedral ?nite element and meshfree techniques, o?ers an approach that doesn't demand user exper&se for meaningful results. To fully unleash the poten&al of this innova&on, advanced scien&?c libraries will be used to provide a high-performance compu&ng framework that is ready for heterogeneous environments. In Phase I, the project will culminate in the demonstra&on of complete simula&on automa&on poten&al with this method. Leveraging exis&ng advanced scien&?c libraries will be instrumental in the implementa&on of the method. A toolkit that provides performance portable solu&ons for evalua&ng generalized moving least squares func&ons will play a pivotal role, as will a toolbox for high- performance, scalable ?nite element discre&za&on research and applica&on development. E?ciency, robustness, and accuracy of the developed method will be rigorously assessed with comparison to the standard ?nite element method across a set of exemplary cases. The impact of this project will ?rst materialize in the realms of aerospace, automo&ve, defense, and energy industries, where dynamic structural analyses are pervasive. The resultant &me and cost savings will empower engineers to op&mize designs, enhancing safety, e?ciency, and sustainability. Subsequently, the library of geometrically versa&le numerical methods will expand, encompassing an array of computa&onal mechanics analyses, including sta&c, thermal, and mul&-physics simula&ons. This expansion will help facilitate the design of novel engineering materials, bolster capabili&es to address cri&cal challenges like energy security, advance space explora&on, and elevate safety standards and overall quality of life by propelling engineering systems and medical simula&ons to new horizons.
