Research abstract

Within the Air Force defense industrial base, industrial equipment supporting maintenance, overhaul and repair (MRO) are critical to meeting the Air Force’s mission needs in the areas of Tactical Air Dominance and Readiness to Deploy and Fight. Production delays due to breakdown of equipment – whether through normal degradation or malicious actions - can severely impact the efficacy and lethality of the Air Force.  Within these MRO operations, many challenges exist around the secure monitoring & diagnostics of machine health, as well as how to prove the efficacy of these monitoring systems such that personnel can trust and respond to them when they indicate an issue. This proposal seeks to improve and further develop OTAware, a "zero-cloud" explainable AI/ML platform to monitor equipment health and status. The OTAware technology is designed to integrate into virtually any kind of machine shop or industrial equipment scenario, and is robustly able to self-train anomaly detection models using a very small amount of computational resources. OTAware enables the deployment of predictive maintenance capabilities to detect emergent issues with equipment health, without needing to deploy cloud-based services, as all information is kept entirely on-device alongside the equipment being monitored.   Sentinel Devices will modify and tailor OTAware to Air Force needs and use cases, and will work with groups supporting MRO within the Air Force to collect data and ensure these adjustments remain performant on Air Force processes. This will take the form of improving portions of the algorithms within OTAware to account for high-variation low-volume production, as well as improvement of the core OTAware software to better meet Air Force user interface needs. Additionally, Sentinel Devices will develop a software interface with existing high-heritage technology developed for the DoD enabling the detection of even extremely sophisticated cyberattacks using physical data. Combined, the total solution developed within this proposal will provide superior protection and coverage for Air Force industrial base assets from normal degradation, faults as well as advanced cyberattacks.
