Research abstract

OKSI proposes the Automated Characterization of Targets (ACT) capabilities that include passively determining the range, orientation, and location of threats of interest in order to enable human operators to rapidly make critical operations decisions. ACT will address the following threats: Surface level threats, including fast incoming attack craft (FIAC) or other larger vessels. Airborne UAS threats, including group 1-5 platforms. Various airborne threat vehicles including hypersonic weapons with skin heating due to shock waves and aerodynamic friction including boost-glide, ballistic missiles, and hypersonic cruise missiles (all traveling at or above Mach 5) as well as traditional threat vehicles such as sub-sonic and supersonic sea skimming (examples SS-N-2 “Styx” and SS-N-22 “Sunburn”) and high altitude supersonic (example Kh-32 “Kitchen”) anti-ship cruise missiles that maintain their own propulsion system including airbreathing or rocket engines burning solid propellants or hydrocarbon fuels. We propose the development of a stack of passive ranging algorithm pipelines for ACT that will provide demonstrative solutions for passively ranging each of these threat types. To this end, the objective of Phase II effort is to design, implement, test, and demonstrate prototype algorithms for passively characterizing key target state information including target range, orientation, and location (where appropriate) within maritime environments. The technologies developed under this effort will transition to the SPEIR program for the Navy.
