Research abstract

For airmen across the globe, understanding and accurately predicting weather situations can mean the difference between mission success and failure. Weather stands alongside cyberspace operations, electronic warfare, information operations, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance as a pivotal pedestal in the U.S. Air ForceÆs information warfare architecture. Weather radars have traditionally been single-dish systems because they are more cost effective than active, electronically scanned systems, however their lack of electronic steering means they canÆt provide adequate forecasting abilities for detecting and tracking severe weather. Ideam TechnologiesÆ RUGOR system has a unique way of creating electronic steering capabilities for a single dish radar system. This innovative approach has the potential to provide the Air Force with a portable weather radar system that can provide better forecasting at a lower cost than currently available alternatives.
