Research abstract

Eonix is developing an ultra-high power lithium ion battery (10kW/kg : 100C Pulse : -40C to 65C) to meet the ambitious energy storage demands of next gen microwave, electromagnetic pulse (EMP), and high energy laser based directed energy weapons and Counter small Unmanned Air Systems (C-sUAS). This is an open architecture approach that leverages a high conductivity electrolyte which is drop-in compatible with any Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) battery format manufactured today such as 18650/2170/4680 cylindrical cells, pouch cells or prismatic cells. By supplanting the linear carbonate solvents (ethyl methyl carbonate/ dimethyl ethyl carbonate) with a low molecular weight, high dielectric solvent and a suite of solid electrolyte interphase forming partially fluoridated additives, Eonix is able to increase the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte from ~20 mS/cm2 to 55mS/cm2, representing a 2.5X increase. This significant increase in conductivity is expected to drastically improve the rate capability of existing lithium ion batteries while also lowering internal resistance and improving low temperature rate capability. The high rate capability, low internal resistance, and improved low temperature performance results in a battery that exceeds the ambitious energy storage demands of directed energy weapons systems. This solution provides significant design flexibility for integration into existing and emerging directed energy systems by enabling the use of any existing cell architecture. Eonix currently has 18650 cylindrical cell and 1Ah/8Ah pouch low volume cell prototyping capabilities onsite to provide end users with demonstration cells as this technology progresses in maturity.Ā
