Research abstract

Programmable metasurfaces (PMs) can dynamically change the phase and/or amplitude perturbation on the impinging signal and redirect the beam to desirable directions or perform beamshaping. This can be enabled by integrating active devices or tunable materials within a periodic pattern and activating them through a control circuitry. As such, a microcontroller (or Field-Programmable-Gate-Array, FPGA) generates the necessary codebook in the form of bit streams and a biasing circuitry routes the activation information across all the tunable elements of the metasurface. Interference suppression techniques play a crucial role in enhancing the reliability and quality of both sensors and communication devices. With the development of the PMs, they can be implemented as a frequency selective surface on the surface of a radome as an EM skin to suppress interference. The goal is to selectively permit desired frequencies to pass through the radome while effectively absorbing or attenuating undesired frequency bands. This approach significantly minimizes undesirable RF scattering both for sensing (i.e., radar) and communication devices. In this program, we propose to develop Intelligent Metasurfaces with Signal Coding for Spectrum Camouflage (INFINITE) system that includes design and implementation of both PMs with reflective and refractive, fast beamforming and signal coding capabilities.Ā
