Research abstract

There are many scenarios where it would be extremely useful to have an ocean mesh networking capability that can Ģ be deployed in advance Ģ be largely undetectable Ģ appear when needed Ģ disappear after use Apeiron Labs attritable or reusable buoyancy-controlled ocean gliders can host both underwater communications as well as over-the-air communications payloads to provide mesh networking capabilities. Our gliders are desiged to be modular with respect to payloads, so multiple over-the-air radio systems can be deployed depending on the use case and bandwidth requirements. Additionally, they also support satellite communication as a redundant communication channel. They will have the ability to loiter in place (i.e., station-keeping) under water as well as travel horizontally to self-assemble into a mesh. This enables them either form an underwater mesh network or rise to the surface and mesh over the air. Our initial modelling shows that we can achieve the required endurance objective of 7 days in an A-size envelope.
