Research abstract

Advanced Scientific Concepts' (ASC) proposed Phase I technical effort centers on the advancement of the Non-Cooperative Target Landing System (NCTLS), a pioneering solution in autonomous landing systems. The NCTLS aims to address the limitations of GPS-dependent systems, allowing for precise landing on non-cooperative targets like boat decks or confined rooftops. This marks a significant leap in Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) aircraft capabilities. ASC's proprietary Global Shutter Flash LiDAR Cameras (GSFL) provide real-time range and intensity information, integral to the functioning of the NCTLS. The GSFL, previously proven robust in harsh environments, including in space applications, will now be applied to autonomous landing operations, increasing operational capabilities of VTOL aircraft. The NCTLS operational process involves stages from mission planning to in-flight navigation and approach and landing. Flash LiDAR creates a Digital Elevation Map (DEM), enabling the identification of safe landing zones regardless of lighting conditions. Algorithms such as Safe Landing Area Determination (SLAD) play a crucial role in this process, analyzing the generated 3D point clouds and DEM data. A unique aspect of the NCTLS is its application of both rule-based and deep learning methods for safe landing zone identification. Methods like SLAD and Inflating Circles process LiDAR data based on predefined criteria, while Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) and Bayesian DNNs offer adaptive learning from diverse data to handle unexpected scenarios. The NCTLS, leveraging pre-existing onboard sensors for maximum efficiency, holds promise as a game-changer in autonomous landing systems. Its potential extends to a range of applications, revolutionizing VTOL aircraft operations in diverse environments and scenarios. This Phase I technical effort seeks to evaluate the feasibility of this system, pioneering a precise, adaptable, and cost-effective solution for non-cooperative target landing.
