Research abstract

As part of its strategic modernization efforts, the US Navy is developing new capabilities and functionalities for the AS(X) submarine tender.  A key objective is to enable at-sea multi-object submarine tender operations (MOSTO) such as cargo / arms replenishment and submarine / tender mooring.  Currently, these operations involve labor-intensive tasks, posing significant risks to both crew members and equipment, thereby impacting mission success.  However, by leveraging emerging Machine Learning / Deep Learning (ML/DL) enabled, 3D vision sensor technology, the Navy can conduct these operations with significantly improved precision, efficiency, and safety.  The essential component for realizing this capability is a tender mounted 3D vision sensor with the following capabilities: (1) multi-object relative pose, location and tracking; (2) operate in sea states 3 and 4; (3) be able to operate during day and night in degraded visual environments; (4) operate at distances at least 50 ft. from side of tender with a 30 ft. vertical working distance; (5) must be able to detect non-cooperative objects (no attached navigational aids); (6) indicate safe sea conditions that permit specific operations; (7) and can be installed on different platforms as needed. Advanced Scientific Concepts LLC (ASC)  is proposing to adapt an existing sea-going global shutter flash LIDAR based intelligent 3D vision sensor for US Navy escort operations to address the MOSTO application.
