Research abstract

Bryka Skystocks proposes a novel broadband laser chaos generation system for free-space optical communication in the mid-wave infrared (MWIR) range. The proposed system utilizes a Directly-Modulated Quantum Cascade Laser (DM-QCL) and an Uncooled Quantum Cascade Detector (QCD) operating at a wavelength of 9.6 Ąm. Bryka will design the DM-QCL and QCD, generate chaos bandwidth in the DM-QCL using optical feedback, and test and validate the system's performance. The proposed system offers several advantages: higher data transfer rates, enhanced security through chaos-based communication, direct modulation capability, compatibility with existing infrastructures, and operation in adverse weather conditions. Bryka Skystocks will collaborate with Dr. Osman Yagan from Carnegie Mellon University to generate chaos bandwidth in the DM-QCL. ĀThe proposed system aims to achieve a chaos bandwidth of 43.1 GHz, a more than 100 m link distance, a bit error rate (BER) of less than 4%, and a data transfer rate greater than 100 Mbit/s. The successful development of this system will contribute to secure and high-bandwidth communication technologies with applications in various sectors, including government and private industries.
