SiBN Fiber Manufacturing

TDA Research proposes to develop a domestic manufacturing facility for making silicon boron nitride (SiBN) fibers from a preceramic polymer. Short fibers made at TDA have previously demonstrated a dielectric constant below 3, and thermal stability to at least 1500 ░C and more extensive overseas work has demonstrated retention of mechanical properties to 1700 ░C. In this project, we are proposing to substantially upscale our manufacturing capacity, which will require substantial engineering development versus our current facility. In particular, methods for improving the polymer-to-ceramic transition at TDA are a focus of the proposed Direct-to-Phase II effort. Both the electrical and mechanical properties of the resulting fibers will then be assessed, from ambient temperature up to the intended use temperature. A portion of the work will be subcontracted to our commercialization partner, thereby both making use of their specialized facilities and getting them involved in the fiber development process at an early stage. The ceramic fibers made during this project will then be available for integration into a ceramic matrix composite suitable for use as a radome above 1500 ░C.
