Research abstract

Kennon is utilizing reliable chemical reactions to consistently inflate life preserver units automatically without the need of batteries. Manual inflation methods apply mechanisms with a high degree of mechanical advantage to inflate life preserver units with a reduced pulling force. The body of the proposed inflator is designed in such a way that the rip cord is directed through a guide eyelet creating omnidirectional functionality. This means that if the cord is incorrectly installed so that it wraps around the manifold of the canister, the actuator should still function with an increased pull force. The proposed automatic inflator reduces the size of the incumbent FLU-8 by up to 60%. Updating the materials and modernizing the manufacturing methods from the incumbent offers an opportunity to reduce the weight of the inflator as well. With KennonÆs extensive knowledge of life preserver units (specifically LPU-21), we are well aware of the riggers involved with developing life-saving equipment.
