Research abstract

Circulating and exosomal miRNAs have been identified as promising biomarkers for multiple diseases and conditions, including acute injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, chronic neuropathic pain, and irradiance exposure. Lab-on-a-chip technology enables automated miRNA detection closer to patients, instead of using central laboratory services. In this project, we aim to develop a rapid, sensitive, low-cost, easy-to-use, and portable miRNA detection platform for point-of-care diagnostics. This novel in vitro diagnostics platform is composed of a sample prep and biosensor unit. In Phase I, we will focus on the proof-of-concept of the sample prep and biosensor unit with several miRNA targets. In Phase II, we will focus on integration and automation to enable statistical validation on an expanded panel of miRNA biomarkers for disease diagnostics. Phase III will focus on manufacturing alpha and beta prototypes. Our automated miRNA detection platform will provide augmented capability in point-of-care miRNA diagnostics for both military and civilian health applications.
