Research abstract

Transformers are critical for the power grid distributions via stepping up down the voltage. The key cause of failure in majority of transformers is the insulation problem related to the kraft paper. The objective of this project is to integrate a collection of advanced surface chemistry, kraft paper fabrication, and rapid property screening, followed by standard testings and pilot demonstration to produce multifunctional insulating kraft papers for transformers. The core technology is based on mechanochemical exfoliation of 2D hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanoparticles with tailored surface functionalization for maximum compatibility and homogeneity with cellulose molecules of papers, giving rise to multifunctional properties such as high thermal conductivity, high dielectric strength, hydrophobicity, high mechanical properties, etc, that all ultimately translate to longer lifetime in kraft paper. Our preliminary results with only ~1% exfoliated ultra-thin hBN loading exhibited significant improvements in several performance metrics of the kraft paper including thermal conductivity, dielectric strength, hydrophobicity, etc, suggesting significant room for optimization and lower hBN loading, yet achieving more enhancement in several performance criteria. We have discussed the key elements of our product with key kraft paper manufacturers (e.g. our partner Weidmann Electrical Technology Inc, one of the world’s leading producers of kraft paper for transforms, see enclosed letter) and utility companies (e.g. Eaton) and they have shown keen interest in the product and assisting in commercialization. C-Crete’s experience in projects with similar complexity, along with our state-of-the-art equipment, facilities and resources, will catalyze successful development and commercialization of this project.
