Research abstract

ntelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) sensors and processing technologies provide access to ever-increasing amounts of diverse intelligence data of variable quality. Wide area motion imagery (WAMI) sensor data, in particular, threatens to overload analysts and their ability to make sense of data in or near real-time. To address these needs and develop improved human-in-the-loop workflows, we conducted a Phase I effort to design a system for Post-Ingest Exploitation (PIE) Analyses using Narrative Operational Frames of Reference for Accelerated Monitoring and Alerting (PANORAMA). PANORAMA combines narrative understanding and micro- and macrocognitive principles to inform the design of an intuitive analyst dashboard to support analysts who are prioritizing, triaging, and making sense of WAMI sensor data so they can respond rapidly and accurately to Requests for Information (RFIs), especially during shift handoff. Under the Phase II effort, we will develop, evaluate, and refine the overall PANORAMA narrative workflow and toolset based on analyst feedback and metrics from formal evaluation. We will also formally evaluate the effect of the PANORAMA system on analyst processes in the context of newly developed and refined operational scenarios.
