Research abstract

The United States Air Force and other service branches need reliable Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT) technology for multiple critical missions. Today the military relies heavily on GPS for PNT. However, GPS can be denied, disrupted, or spoofed, making it potentially unreliable in hostile environment. PhasorLab Inc. of Nashua New Hampshire intends to develop and deploy a reliable and resilient Assured Position, Navigation and Timing (A-PNT) solution as an alternative to GPS for Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) based on its Hyper Sync Net (HSN) technology developed and matured over past seven years of R/D.   Hyper Sync Net (HSN) is Time and Frequency Distribution System (TFDS), employing innovative technologies to achieve sub-nanosecond time synchronization and less-than one part-per-billion (ppb) frequency synchronization. HSN can be quickly deployed as a mobile wireless solution capable of self-organizing, self-healing, and operating under jamming attacks while providing networking capabilities without any advance onsite pre-planning.  HSN is well-suited for providing cost-effective mobile PNT services as a backup or complementary solution to GPS.   In this proposed SBIR Phase 2 effort, PhasorLab will deliver an autonomous drone fleet navigation system collaborating with Major Devin Beckwith of US Special Forces (our target end user) and our TPOC Mr. Raj Malhotra of AFRL (also our Customer) utilizing HSN as the platform technology. As part of phase 2  R&D, we will demonstrate our A-PNT solution by delivering a plug and play module compatible with blue-SUAS certified drones. This module will enable drones to use HSN-based PNT solution when GPS is jammed or unavailable, and go back to using GPS again when available. If successful, this is a game-changing capability not just for the DoD but also for the larger aviation industry which is on the cusp of launching self-driving air taxis, drone-based delivery services, and other new systems requiring reliable PNT services.
