Research abstract

GeneInfosec is developing a novel method to apply cryptography directly to DNA molecules, significantly enhancing the biosecurity of our most sensitive information. This patented molecular cryptography technology protects genetic information before it ever touches a computer or connected device, reducing the risk of incidental data breaches, supply chain vulnerabilities, and malicious cyber actors.  As genetic engineering capabilities become more democratized and accessible, the strategic importance of securing our genetic data becomes even more critical. The DoD maintains a repository of over 7.8 million individual DNA data samples of active duty, reserve, national guard, and DoD civilians and enrolls over 225,000 new samples annually. This is one of the largest DNA holdings of U.S. citizens in the world and must be protected. GeneInfoSec’s system applies unique security tags to each molecule prior to sequencing, so genetic data generated by a sequencer cannot be directly attributed to any sample or individual.  Researchers and military healthcare professionals can then use keys to decrypt the data in a secure computing environment, share portions of the genetic sequence with other healthcare professionals with a need-to-know, and provide long-term storage without the risk of data breach.
