Research abstract
To address the USSOCOM need for a transparent in-vehicle display screen, Intellisense Systems, Inc. (Intellisense) proposes to develop a new Transparent Armor Nanostructure Display (TAND) system to enhance crew situational awareness, reduce cognitive workload, and eliminate in-vehicle stand-alone displays. This compact transparent armor (TA) display system is based on the unique combination of a full time day illumination/NVIS-compatible, wide viewing angle solution with highly transparent holographic reflective narrowband filters and nanoparticle (HN) film layered on top of the TA, driven by optical engine array (OEA) image tiling and hardware-agnostic display driver electronics (DDE). Specifically, the innovation in TAND allows the display to be operable under heavy impact even if the TA is damaged. The use of selective narrowband nanostructures provides full-time, high see-through transparency. The display imagery is only visible inside the vehicle cabin, thus providing light security and low probability of detection during vehicle blackout operations. The use of the OEA tiling allows scalability for high display brightness and resolution beyond 4K. The innovative HN film technology reduces deployment time since it can easily retrofit to existing vehicles and future TA technology. The broad backscattering component achieves a wide viewing angle to allow any occupant to view the imagery. The hardware-agnostic DDE will accept one or more feeds, including the IVAS, ATAK, and PCBCS, and subsequently display readouts and overlays on the windshield. As a result, TAND technology offers a sunlight readable, highly transparent display without impairing the ballistic performance of the TA, which directly addresses the USSOCOM requirements. In Phase I, Intellisense will conduct a feasibility study, investigate risks and potential payoffs of the innovative technology, and demonstrate the feasibility of TAND by developing and evaluating a laboratory benchtop test bed. In Phase II, Intellisense plans to develop, install, and demonstrate a prototype system for the M-ATV to enable enhanced crew SA and driver cognitive workload reduction.
