Research abstract

Hypersonic weapon systems (traveling at Mach 5+) are a priority for the U.S. Navy and DoD to counter emerging threats, deliver precision strikes, and maintain strategic deterrence. These vehicles are expensive to develop, test, maintain, and deliver due to their complex materials, propulsion systems, and extreme operating environments.áLogistic Modeling and Simulation (M&S) tools offer a cost-effective strategy to ensure these systems are designed, developed, produced, stored, transported, and ultimately deployed efficiently across operations. Specifically, an M&S tool capable of generating precise timing of hypersonic vehicle systems and subsystems can help ensure mission success by optimizing supply chains, maintenance schedules, and resource allocation, while reducing downtime, and ensuring mission readiness, reliability, and accuracy in time-sensitive conditions.áKAES is proposing to develop a Hypersonic Timing Window Modeling and Simulation Tool (HyTWIST), a custom M&S timing software tool developed for the operational lifecycle of hypersonic weapon systems. This tool will be capable of capturing timing windows that can be used for mission planning by integration and logistics experts and will be designed to account for system and subsystem-level performance requirements, various physics-based effects during prelaunch, launch, and post-launch phases, and component reliability considerations, among others. The overall impact of HyTWIST would be to enhance operational effectiveness by aligning all phases with tight tolerances, reducing the risk of mission failure, and increasing the U.S. Navyĺs rapid strike capabilities.
