Research abstract

GENESIS (Generative AI for Educational Systems and Instructional Support) is a next-generation platform designed to automate and enhance instructional systems design (ISD) through the integration of generative AI, semantic knowledge graphs, and human-AI collaboration. Targeting the needs outlined in the Marine Corps' Training and Education 2030 vision, GENESIS ingests unstructured legacy training materialsŚsuch as Programs of Instruction (POIs), PowerPoint slides, and Word documentsŚand uses natural language processing and generative modeling to extract instructional elements including learning objectives, concepts, and assessment cues. These elements are structured into a domain-specific knowledge graph that models pedagogical dependencies and objective alignments, supporting automated reasoning over instructional coverage and sequencing. Instructors interact with the system through a natural language interface that allows them to review, refine, and justify AI-generated course structures while maintaining full instructional authority. GENESIS is designed not only to accelerate course development but also to ensure instructional coherence, adaptability, and explainabilityŚcapabilities lacking in existing LMS and content authoring platforms. In Phase I, we focus on designing parsing workflows, knowledge graph schemas, and collaborative interface mockups, and demonstrate concept feasibility using sample content from the Leadership Education I (LE I) curriculum. The resulting system will provide a scalable foundation for AI-assisted course design across military, government, and commercial training environments.
