Research abstract

This proposal is focused on a reflective NMBS architecture called the Lightfield Directing Array.  The Lightfield Directing Array is a new class of NMBS technology created through the hybridization of conventional silicon microfabrication and micro-additive manufacturing, offering all the advantages of NMBS while avoiding the limitations of current refractive approaches.  The result is a device that can dramatically exceed the technical specifications of the Packaged Mid-Infrared Non-Mechanical Beam Steerer topic including operational performance (speed, steering range, throughput, optical power, and beam quality) and system impacts (space, weight, and power). Consistent with the topic description of state-of-the-art NMBS technologies, the Lightfield Directing Array has been demonstrated at laboratory scale, but requires additional development of robust packaging for DoD applications.  The technical objectives of this Phase I project are to: Design a fully packaged Lightfield Directing Array device optimized for NMBS operation in MWIR. Analytically demonstrate the performance of the Lightfield Directing Array against the technical specifications. Develop MWIR Lightfield Directing Array NMBS prototyping plan and MRL roadmap.
