Research abstract

Venus Aerospace is developing a boost-glide hyperjet that takes off from an airport (jet engines), boosts to Mach 15 and 150kft (rocket engines), and then glides across the world in 1 hour; ready to fly again in 2 hours.  Three key technologies enable this: the rotating detonation rocket engine, a stable multi-mach waverider airframe, and leading edge cooling.  In this STTR Phase I, the leading edge cooling via heat pipe is examined, by 1) refining the flight path external heating model and the thermal soak of the vehicle, and 2) modeling the heat pipe effectiveness, with the goal of keeping the leading edge below 1500 F and enabling a supernickel leading edge (no ceramics).
