Research abstract

For advanced new Army weapon and target platforms, increases in flight test complexity, large-scale geographic distribution of test execution teams, and growth in complexity of formal Launch Constraints and other test execution procedures, drive the need for innovative tools and methods to support flight test execution team-based pre-mission training. Army Space and Missile Defense Command (SMDC) requires a centralized platform that can be deployed across the distributed execution team to support rapid planning, execution, and assessment of flight test pre-mission training. Specifically, Mission Directors require tools that increase the realism and effectiveness of training to address current gaps between training and real-world flight test events through three key features: (1) real-time anomaly insertion; (2) operator action tracking; and (3) team readiness assessments. To address this need, Charles River Analytics proposes to design and evaluate an Assessment Platform for Operators to Gain flight test Execution Experience (APOGEE). APOGEE integrates functionality from existing, distributed test systems with an operationally proven and deployed centralized training platform to enable Mission Directors to control all aspects of pre-mission training. APOGEE’s Integration Layer will provide an interface through which all existing distributed federated systems can communicate and transmit data to support training events. The Mission Control Platform serves as the primary operator facing user interface (UI), providing intuitive interfaces for the Flight Test Director to select and configure training scenarios, insert anomalies in real-time, and view data-driven displays and tailored visualizations of telemetry data and key metrics of operator performance. Finally, APOGEE’s Readiness Assessment Engine tracks and analyzes all operator actions and leverages our Methodology for Annotating Skill Trees (MAST) to evaluate operator performance and assess individual and team readiness to execute live flight tests.
