Research abstract

To address the Navy’s need for a submarine conductivity, temperature, and depth sensor for high accuracy ocean environment measurements, Intellisense Systems, Inc. proposes to develop a new Submarine Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth (SubCTD) system as a form-fit replacement with enhanced performance to existing systems. It will utilize high accuracy sensing elements with custom preamplifier and data acquisition electronics for communicating vital ocean environment information to applicable submarine systems. In addition, the system will utilize a custom mechanical housing specifically designed and optimized to efficiently sample water from the ship’s free stream for an accurate representation of the surrounding ocean environment. An iterative approach of design, flow dynamics simulations, component fabrication, and experimental verification cycles will serve to provide the Navy with a fully optimized system for specific SSBN/SSGN/Columbia class submarines. In Phase I, Intellisense successfully demonstrated the feasibility of the SubCTD technology through design, assembly, and demonstration of the major subunits of the SubCTD technology as well as a fully assembled prototype. In Phase II, Intellisense plans to design, fabricate, and test a fully integrated prototype system with demonstrated performance through simulation and test in preparation for Navy validation and real-world testing.
