Research abstract

Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI), with the Support of Lockheed Martin Space, proposes to develop a novel ultra-thin and flexible electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material with high-temperature resistance for direct, conformal application to internal electronics of hypersonic craft. PSI’s Conformal Electromagnetic Radiation Absorptive MXene-Integrated Composite (CERAMIC) coating incorporates MXene conductive filler material for high EMI shielding into PSI’s own novel flexible SiC-based composite matrix using a pre-ceramic polymer (PCP) as a binder that has shown to be thermally stable up to 1000°C. This new technology will provide absorption-dominant EMI shielding, thereby preventing secondary EMI pollution and harmful effects on other internal systems, all while remaining thin and flexible to meet low size, weight and power (SWaP) requirements. In the prior Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, PSI demonstrated the feasibility of the CERAMIC coating technology by down-selecting to a final MXene/SiC/PCP composition that achieved the objective level of EMI shielding at up to 300°C in a <1-mm thick film. In the Phase II program, PSI will optimize the CERAMIC formulation to retain the desired level of shielding within a thinner and lighter form factor. The formulation will be scaled-up to evaluate film deposition methodologies and to demonstrate broadband capability for EMI shielding and jamming applications. PSI will work with Lockheed Martin to transition the CERAMIC shielding technology into an existing or developmental hypersonic Missile Defense Agency (MDA) platform.
