Research abstract

Three opportunities are identified for improving aircrew readiness related to certification and Guardian Angel combat rescue missions. 1) Current cardboard honeycombs are one-time use limiting capacity to support aerial delivery aircrew certification, being labor intensive and increasing material cost. We replace cardboard honeycomb with Shock-Honeycomb, elastomeric materials with multiple use and less labor intensive at compatible or lower overall costs. 2) Vehicle specific CEPs are heavy platforms made of wood. Weight, material, and changing configurations burdens training squadron’s resources, such as 320th Special Tactics Squadron. A lightweight training CEP will reduce the burden of assembly, multiple CEP storage, and decrease mission risk in foreign countries. 3) The Guardian Angel program is scheduled to convert its SRTV from gas-powered to diesel. With this change, vehicle weight is not within the limit of the current CEP. Weight reduction of SRTV CEP is needed to field the next model SRTV. A lightweight SRTV CEP increases auxiliary equipment deployed with SRTVs. It will allow the aerial delivery for the next model of SRTVs with diesel engines. Light Adaptable Airdrop Platform (LAAP) is a light, effective and adjustable airdrop platform. LAAP utilizes a combination of ShockTech commercial products and Shock-Honeycomb.
