Research abstract

Childbirth is one of the most critical moments in a person's life, yet millions of women in rural areas across the United States face significant challenges in accessing high-quality maternal healthcare. These challenges often result in delayed or missed diagnoses of complications during labor, putting mothers and babies at unnecessary risk. Rural clinics often struggle with insufficient infrastructure, limited access to advanced medical devices, and a lack of specialized training for healthcare providers. Rural mothers oftentimes have to travel long distances to reach a medical center that offers maternal care, with limited to no community clinic support closer to home. This project seeks to address these disparities by introducing an innovative, user-friendly medical device that uses advanced technology to improve labor monitoring, reduce medical errors, and provide equitable access to care for rural populations. To tackle these challenges, Ciconia Medical is developing an AI-based device specifically designed for the assessment of preterm labor and labor progress, addressing the limitations of traditional vaginal examinations and the shortage of obstetric specialists in rural areas. This solution aims to ensure equitable access to maternal care and ultimately improve outcomes for women and children in these communities. To achieve these goals, the project will focus on three key areas. First, we will assess the readiness of rural clinics by analyzing their internet connectivity, power reliability, and ability to integrate advanced technologies. Next, we will develop protocols that allow healthcare providers in rural clinics to use the device effectively, even with minimal prior experience. This will include creating detailed training materials and running hands-on workshops. Lastly, we will engage local communities by educating patients and caregivers about the importance of early detection of labor complications and demonstrating the benefits of the device in improving outcomes. All efforts will be supported by comprehensive data collection and feedback loops to ensure the success of the program.By achieving these objectives, the project aims to transform maternal healthcare in rural areas. If successful, it will reduce the number of preventable complications during childbirth, improve patient trust in rural healthcare systems, and empower clinicians with tools that are both effective and easy to use. Beyond healthcare, the societal benefits are vast: healthier families, stronger communities, and a more equitable healthcare system. This initiative has the potential to set a new standard for maternal care, ensuring that every woman, regardless of where she lives, has access to safe and reliable healthcare during one of the most important moments of her life.
