Research abstract

The goal of the Phase II work is to develop a prototype COTS/Semi-COTS detector optimized for use with the Varex K15A Linatron X-ray source. In the conducted Phase I work, three candidate detector configurations were identified, with the second detector configuration as likely the most optimal, and the first detector configuration as the second choice. During the first part of the Phase II work, an experimental test bed will be developed and extensive testing of the candidate detector configuration will be performed both at 9 MeV and 15 MeV. Based on this investigation, a decision will be made to proceed either with the second configuration or if its performance is not satisfactory, with the first detector configuration. After the final detector configuration has been selected, the prototype detector will be constructed and HECT performance testing carried out using the D5 calibration/defect standards to validate that the images produced are equivalent or better than those produced with the current HECT’s detector assemblies, and that there is improved resolution, bit depth, sensitivity and life of detector. In the Phase II Option stage (if exercised), an enhanced second configuration detector will be investigated, a prototype constructed and its HECT performance evaluated.
