Research abstract

After-Action Reviews (AARs) are an essential aspect of experiential training, yet for P-8A crews, AARs after live flights are rare. The only post-flight debrief systems currently in use are those for reconstructing aircraft system (not aircrew) performance and in-depth analyses that address specific issues of select flights. In both cases, on average, an analysis takes several weeks to complete. A system is needed that provides feedback to aircrews about their performance in a timely and effective manner. Aptima’s Aircrew Performance Measurement and Proficiency System (A-PuMPS) aims to address this need. A-PuMPS will integrate data from multiple systems and present them in one interface in formats familiar to operators, (2) deliver AARs within 24 hours by integrating data about milestone events only, and (3) integrate observer notes when ground truth is not available. For instructors, A-PuMPS provides the means to construct and present a narrative from teachable moments to focus trainees’ attention and guide them toward higher degrees of proficiency. For trainees, A-PuMPS provides a means to develop shared understanding of context about a mission before the memory of that mission fades. For P-8A aircrews, A-PuMPS represents an intervention designed to make AARs real and drive training to new levels.
