Research abstract

The Physical Sciences Inc. team proposes to optimize and scale up the portable, modular microreactor systems developed in Phase I, which were designed to produce the energetic ionic liquids that constitute the AF-M315E propellant. In Phase I, process feasibility was demonstrated in the microreactor systems for production of the targeted energetic compounds. In Phase II, we will optimize these microreactor systems to provide high purity products, efficient recycling, and minimal waste. In addition, we will build and operate a pilot-scale system comprising parallel units made from robust, scalable hardware. The pilot system will be used to demonstrate continuous, end-to-end production of the desired energetic compounds, including all reaction and purification stages. The Phase II program will conclude with a commercial scale design including complete engineering diagrams and drawings, and a detailed cost estimation. Upon successful technology development under the SBIR program, full-scale prototype systems will be developed in follow-on technology transition programs.
