Research abstract

RMSL has identified several potential propellant formulations that show promise in dual mode applications. These formulations include: (1) development of a novel organic oxidizer and (2) the mechanical modification of traditional nitramine propellants to tune propulsion and detonability performance. Preliminary analysis suggested that the proposed new explosive, MHX, had promise for dual-mode applications by providing superior performance when incorporated into traditional propellant formulations. MHX is significantly oxygen rich, which could bring enhanced benefits compared to other high-oxygen explosives like SMX and significantly improved performance compared to traditional nitramines. Secondly, mechanically modifying traditional nitramine propellent formulations are shown to enhance burn rates and propensity for detonability. The premise behind this approach was that mechanical modification via reactive milling of the formulation as a nanostructured but micron-sized composite. Propellant formulations utilizing these two approaches will be scale-up, tested, and validated for potential use in dual mode applications. A comprehensive suite of tests will be performed to ascertain physical safety, thermal stability, and energetic performance of these formulations. The final Phase II evaluation will culminate in a rocket motor test on a down-selected dual mode blend. Testing will include motor thrust testing, successful extinguishing of the motor, and detonability of the remaining propellant.
