Research abstract

Ground-based space telescopes contend with atmospheric turbulence that distorts imagery. Despite adaptive optics (AO) mitigating these effects, deconvolution is needed because of residual distortions exist and not all telescopes have AO. The aim of this project is to develop blind deconvolution that operates in real time (between 2 and 30 frames/sec.). The objectives of Phase II are: (a), develop, build and deliver to the Starfire Optical Range a working system that includes software and high-performance computer hardware, (b), carry out improvements to the blind deconvolution that further improve picture clarity and speed. The system will employ multiple graphical processing units (GPU’s) that execute the algorithm at high speed through parallel processing. The system will be scalable for future improvements and maintenance for many years to come, by being compatible with standard personal computer architectures and operating systems (Linux and Windows).
