Research abstract

Nanohmics is developing an innovative system for restoring atmospheric turbulence-degraded imagery in real-time. The Real-time Online GPU Enabled Turbulence Compensation (ROGUE-TC) system applies fast Multiframe Blind Deconvolution methods to ground observations of space objects using a custom, standalone GPU workstation consisting of commercial off-the-shelf components. ROGUE-TC algorithms make efficient use of the massively parallel architectures of GPUs, and yield compensations that are more robust and of higher quality than those obtained with previous blind deconvolution methods. The implementation of new intra and inter GPU and CPU parallelization strategies is anticipated to enable compensations of 512×512 px images at frame rates up to 33 Hz. A customizable, user-friendly graphical interface will display the compensated imagery in real-time and provide easy access to configuration parameters for operators with all levels of experience. The ROGUE-TC system will include support for live sensor feeds, simultaneous compensations of multiple image streams, and automatic selection of configuration parameters. To support future applications with higher computational demands, the ROGUE-TC system will be scalable through upgrades to individual hardware components and the use of multiple interconnected GPU machines.
