Research abstract

Easy Aerial proposes to significantly improve perimeter security and situational awareness at AF bases or temporary tactical installations by using an effective, fully autonomous aerial monitoring solution performed with a small, lightweight quadcopter. Easy Aerial’s Smart Aerial Monitoring System (SAMS) is a fully autonomous “drone-in-a-box security solution with two basic operational modes: (1) SAMS performs ongoing aerial patrols around a defined perimeter or fence at predetermined intervals; sending Live HD and thermal video; lands autonomously inside the box to be automatically recharged. (2) SAMS performs on-demand aerial missions triggered by third-party external sensors (such as fence sensors, fire alarms etc.). Following an alarm the drone will fly to location without any human intervention. In the proposed research, we are adding a third SAMS operational mode by introducing change detection algorithms (CDAs) that automatically detect anomalies in the terrain and send alerts to the control center. They use abstract or direct change detection (ACD or DCD) approaches to deliver CDA results in real time. The SAMS won the AFWERX golden ticket; was demonstrated to security forces from several AF bases and the AFSFC in Nevada in July 18 and was demonstrated during he USAF marathon near Wright-Patterson AFB in September 18.
