Research abstract

A program to develop a compact, VNIR-SWIR dual-band focalplane imager for seeker/sensor applications is proposed. The Dual-Band Image Sensor (D-BIS) builds upon Surface Optics real-time spectral imaging activities, including our 3D full-motion video spectral imaging (FMV-SI) technology and our MIDIS hyperspectral image processor.Using a dual-band focalplane to produce up to eight bands from 0.42.5 microns over a full two-dimensional field, the system is ideal for identifying and tracking targets of interest to modern warfare; the system also enables daytime star tracking.Under the Phase II effort, the preliminary design developed under Phase I will be finalized and detailed, and the system built and tested; the system will include a compact, rugged, real-time dual-band and eight sub-band spectral imager plus the real-time hyperspectral (HS) data processor. The proposed effort represents an extension of Surface Optics 26 years experience in hyperspectral imager design, and miniaturization of SOCs patented real-time hyperspectral image processor for real-time spectral discrimination.By building on Surface Optics Corporations experience in hyperspectral imaging system development, sensor development, and algorithm development, the proposed program will produce a new full-motion video dual-band focalplane imager of unsurpassed capability.
