Research abstract

A program to develop a compact, color-visible (VIS) / shortwave infrared (SWIR) Color Dual-band Image Sensor (C-DIS) is proposed.Ý This dual-band sensor for Naval situational awareness and potential target detection and tracking builds upon Surface Opticsí real-time spectral imaging activities, including our work in both dual-FPA and single-FPA dual-band imaging, our LightShift full-motion video spectral imaging (FMV-SI) technology, and our MIDIS spectral image processor.Ý Simultaneously producing coregistered visible-band color and SWIR imagery over a high resolution two-dimensional field, the system is ideal for situational awareness day and night, while also enabling detection and tracking of targets of interest to modern warfare.Ý Through a series of trade studies and preliminary design, the proposed program will develop and analyze an optimized design for a compact color-VIS/SWIR dual-band imager appropriate for integration on a submarine mast; alternate applications include use as a seeker sensor, integration on small UASís for target sensing applications, and more.Ý The system includes a compact, rugged, real-time dual-band imager plus the real-time spectral image processor.Ý The proposed effort represents an extension of Surface Opticsí 34 yearsí experience in high speed imager design and miniaturization of SOCís spectral image processor for real-time target discrimination.Ý By building on Surface Optics Corporationís experience in spectral imaging system development, sensor development, processor development, and algorithm development, the proposed program will produce a new full-motion-video dual-band imager of unsurpassed capability.
