Research abstract

A program to develop a compact, Dyson-based, Midwave hyperspectral imaging system for material classification and target detection/identification, as well as gas detection and quantification, is proposed.  The proposed design form for this hyperspectral imager builds upon Surface Optics hyperspectral imaging activities.  Using an MWIR focal plane array, the system produces calibrated MWIR spectral imagery that can measure both solar reflection and self-emission.  Through a series of trade studies and preliminary design, the proposed program will develop and analyze an optimized design for the system.  The system will include a compact, rugged, spectral imager and scan mirror for producing image cubes of the desired scene.  The proposed effort represents an extension of Surface Optics’ 32 years’ experience in hyperspectral imager design, and by using the Dyson design form, this will result in a high-quality, low distortion sensor which meets the SWaP constraints of attritable platforms.
